Jun Zhao is a senior associate at Fairtrade Asia Pacific. He served as a rural development specialist for the World Bank from 2010 to 2015 and currently works as a consultant for organizations such as the World Bank, FAO, IFAD, EU, C&A Foundation, BCI, and CottonConnect.


Jun has more than two decades of experience in rural and agricultural development in China and southeast Asian countries. He has directly led several high-quality field studies. His recent experience includes research and evaluation in rural economic development, development project management (whole project cycle), organic farming (supports and certification), farmers’ cooperatives, and inclusive value chains.

Recent research and evaluation work on sustainable development includes:
  • Enhancing the Role of Farmer Cooperatives in Inclusive Agricultural Growth (World Bank, 2016)
  • Assessment of Accelerating Organic Cotton in China by Replicating Behavioral Change, implemented by RARE in China (C&A Foundation, 2018)
  • External Final Evaluation of Multi-Country Sustainable Cotton Programme, implemented by CottonConnect in China, India and Pakistan (C&A Foundation,2017)
  • Development of More Sustainable Service Delivery Model for Smallholder Cotton Farmers, funded by the BCI Growth and Innovation Fund (2018)
  • A Brief Study of the Cotton Sector in China, for CottonConnect (2018)
