The Community Economic and Social Development Department (CESD) is a department at the Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The program offers a four-year degree that combines economic and social approaches to community development. Faculty, staff and students are expected to work with community-based organizations while conducting their research. The program works closely with Indigenous and Northern communities in Ontario.
A group of 22 community and academic partners met in Sault Ste. Marie on April 20-21, 2006. This was the first strategic planning session for the northern Ontario research program of the Linking, Learning, Leveraging SSHRC-funded Social Economy project. Gayle Broad (B.A. (Laurentian-Algoma), Ph.D. (Bristol)), a professor with the Department of Community Economic and Social Development at Algoma University, is leading the research work being done in Northern Ontario. Dr. Broad’ areas of expertise include Community Economic and Social Development, Sociology and Social Welfare, Law and Politics, Public Legal Education, Violence Against Women, Poverty Issues, Participatory Action Research.
