The Institute of Urban Studies (IUS) at the University of Winnipeg took over the role of administration for Manitoba in the Linking, Learning, Leveraging Social Economy project after Tom Carter retired as director of the Winnipeg Inner-City Research Alliance (WIRA). WIRA was affiliated with the Institute for Urban Studies  It was formed in 1999 by a diverse group of academic and community partners who came together to combine their strengths and resources in promoting the development of sustainable inner-city neighbourhoods.

The Institute of Urban Studies is an independent research arm of the University of Winnipeg. Since 1969 IUS has been both an academic and an applied research centre, committed to examining urban development issues in a broad, non-partisan manner. The Institute examines inner city, environmental, Aboriginal and community development issues. In addition to its ongoing involvement in research, IUS brings in visiting scholars, hosts workshops, seminars and conferences, and acts in partnership with other organizations in the community to affect positive change.

Jino Distasio, Director of the Institute for Urban Studies since 2003, took over the helm of the Manitoba research in 2009. Dr. Distasio has worked extensively in Winnipeg’s inner city as well as researching Canadian and global urban issues and also actively teaches urban issues and is an Adjunct Professor of City Planning at the University of Manitoba. He is also routinely asked to provide both local and national media comment on issues relating to urban change and poverty, transportation, inner city renewal and other civic and urban issues.

Monica Adeler is the project administrator for the research projects being undertaken in Manitoba.
