Linking, Learning, Leveraging Node Symposia

January 27-28, 2006 / Social Economy Symposium: Saskatoon
A very successful first meeting of the Linking, Learning, Leveraging project was held January 27th and 28th, 2006 when 75 researchers and community partners gathered at Wanuskewin Heritage Park. Friday was spent with community partners making presentations about their organizations’ activities and their perspectives on the research needs relating to the social economy. On Saturday, January 28th researchers and community partners met within their research clusters to discuss research directions for the project.

February 18-20, 2007 / Social Economy Symposium: Winnipeg
Approximately 45 community and academic partners and students from Northern Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan gathered for a two-day symposium to share what research projects are underway, and to provide input and ideas to direct the initiative’s social economy research direction. There was an evening program on Sunday, Feb. 18th, and a full day and a half of meeting together on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 19-20. The afternoon of Tuesday, Feb. 20th was reserved for separate meetings of the Ontario and Manitoba partners.

April 20-21, 2006 / Community and Economic Social Development Spring Workshop - A group of 22 community and academic partners met at Algoma University College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. This was the first strategic planning session for the northern Ontario research program of the Linking, Learning, Leveraging SSHRC-funded Social Economy project. A brief description of the results of this meeting can be found at the link above.

February 20, 2007 / Community and Economic Social Development Annual Workshop - During the Regional Symposium that took place in Winnipeg, the CESD group had the opportunity to spend an afternoon together sharing news about their projects to date.

February 7, 2008 / Community and Economic Social Development Annual Workshop - Approximately 40 academics, community partners and student researchers took part in this workshop at Algoma University College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Presentations were done by those involved with the various projects taking place under CESD’s leadership resulting in much discussion and appreciation for the important work being done. Successes were celebrated, challenges were discussed, ideas were considered and experiences were shared. More information can be found by following the workshop link.

February 20, 2007 / WIRA/LLL Provincial Social Economy Workshop - This workshop took place during the Regional Symposium and allowed the many partners involved with projects being conducted under WIRA an opportunity to meet and share news about their research activities to date.

January 11, 2008 / WIRA/LLL Provincial Social Economy Workshop - Academics, community partners and student researchers met to share information about the Linking, Learning, Leveraging projects being undertaken in Manitoba under WIRA’s leadership. The group met at the University of Winnipeg. Here is the agenda from this workshop.

December 5, 2006 / Saskatchewan Region Social Economy Workshop - The goal of this workshop was to share with all Saskatchewan partners the findings of the summer internships and to establish next steps. In sharing the findings and reviewing project goals, all partners were engaged in defining directions for future research. The 32 workshop participants met at the Saskatchewan Association for Community Living conference room in Saskatoon. See the workshop agenda here.

May 3, 2008 / Saskatchewan Region Social Economy Workshop - Approximately 40 academics, community partners and student researchers as well as some observers attended this workshop at the Native Friendship Centre in Saskatoon. Researchers reported on the progress of some of the projects being undertaken under CUISR’s leadership. Students and community participants shared their experiences, challenges and successes followed by time for questions and answers and general discussion. For more information, follow the link above.

May 28 – June 1, 2007 / “Co-operatives and Innovation: Influencing the Social Economy” in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada
We were pleased to be involved with the planning of the 2007 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, where we hosted the International Co-operative Alliance Committee on Co-operative Research (ICA), the Association for Cooperative Educators (ACE), and the Canadian Association for Studies in Co-operation (CASC). The Social Economy was a central theme of the Congress, featured on Thursday, May 31, 2007. See the conference website for more detailed information.

October 3, 2006 / SSHRC site visit at the Centre for the Study of Co-operatives
We were pleased to be able to host two SSHRC representatives for a site visit on Tuesday, October 3, 2006. Visiting were Eric Bastien, Program Officer, Strategic Programs and Joint Initiatives, and Marc Fonda, Acting Director, Strategic Programs and Joint Initiatives, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). There were presentations from the Linking, Learning, Leveraging regional node researchers and community partners, as well as student interns regarding the activity within the node. The SSHRC representatives also discussed the planned evaluation process, and reporting requirements. This was a successful and productive event.
